Australian shepherd
Despite the name, the Australian Shepherd was developed in the United States.
Bred to herd livestock, particularly sheep.
- Males: 20-23 inches (51-58 cm) tall, weigh 50-65 lbs (23-29 kg).
- Females: 18-21 inches (46-53 cm) tall, weigh 40-55 lbs (18-25 kg).
- Coat: Medium-length, water-resistant double coat. Colors include blue merle, red merle, black, and red, often with white and/or tan markings.
- Eyes: Almond-shaped, expressive eyes. Can be blue, brown, amber, or a combination (heterochromia is common).
- Lifespan: Generally lives 12-15 years.
- Grooming Needs: Regular brushing required to manage shedding and prevent matting. Moderate shedder, heavier during seasonal shedding.
- Health Concerns: Prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, and eye problems like cataracts. Merle-colored Aussies may be more prone to deafness and blindness, particularly if both parents are merle.
