The Bordetella vaccine is essential for protecting dogs against Bordetella bronchiseptica, a leading cause of kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory disease. Kennel cough can result in a persistent, dry hacking cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, and in severe cases, lethargy and loss of appetite. The vaccine is especially recommended for dogs that are frequently in contact with other dogs, such as in boarding facilities, grooming salons, training classes, dog parks, or shelters.
The vaccine can be administered in three forms: injectable, intranasal (nose drops), or oral (by mouth). It generally starts providing immunity within 48–72 hours of administration. Puppies usually receive their first Bordetella shot at 6–8 weeks of age, with boosters every 6 to 12 months, depending on lifestyle and vet recommendations.
